Make room for the markings

Check versions, placement and product instructions before using decals.

Choose the version before cutting

Look through the kit’s marking options and decide which version you intend to reproduce. Read the corresponding placement instructions alongside assembly choices, because optional parts may belong to a specific scheme. Keep the unused alternatives with the instructions. If you prefer a fictional arrangement, note that decision rather than presenting it as a verified historical example. A clear plan reduces the temptation to use whichever marking happens to look appealing halfway through.

Check the type of marking supplied

Do not assume every sheet or sticker is used the same way. Read whether the kit includes water-slide decals, adhesive stickers, transfers or another system. Follow the manufacturer’s method and any restrictions. Our notes concern planning and record-keeping, not a replacement application recipe. Identify the markings you will use and check their location numbers without separating everything from the sheet before you need it.

Think about the surface and products together

Read the guidance for the actual marking system, paint and any setting solutions or final coating. A product marketed for decals is not automatically compatible with every decal and painted surface. Test the intended combination on a suitable spare piece or unused marking where feasible, following maker directions. Do not apply a general solvent recipe or guess dilution from someone else’s different product. Record the product names and order so a successful test can be reproduced.

Keep a small placement checklist

Write the key locations in a simple sequence and cross-check left and right sides against the kit diagrams. Some markings can look similar while differing in orientation or size. Leave enough workspace to keep the instruction sheet visible and avoid handling a model more than necessary during a stage. Follow the actual product’s waiting guidance before proceeding. At the end, retain a note of which scheme you chose, what was used and any changes. This record is useful when returning to a partly completed model, repairing a display piece or comparing a second build without relying on memory.
